What is this about?

There is a growing series of debates about the use of genetically modified food. We intend for this website to provide a framework for following the public policy debates and the context in which these debates are taking place.

Modern biotechnology permits the isolation of specific genes in an organism. It also has developed techniques to remove specific genes and insert them in other organisms, plants and animals, in order to modify those organisms in the future.

This technology has given rise to a large industry spending hundreds of billions of dollars to create new varieties of plants, animals, and microrganisms.
