The debate about artificial intelligence figures prominently in
humanity's quest for the answers to some of our most burning questions:
Who are we? What kind of a beings are we? What is our place in
the universe? Underlying these questions and their various answers
is a foundational subquestion: what is it about human thinking
and the human mind that makes us unique? Are we unique? What is
it that separates us from animals?
The search for artificial intelligence as a profession and a goal has honed those questions of identity to a razor-sharp point. The field acts as a lightning rod for discussion about the nature of mind and human identity.
